What is GSM?

GSM is one of the most useful numbers in packaging, yet it is often misunderstood. If you have ever wondered why one paper bag feels flimsy and another feels premium, GSM is usually the answer.

What does GSM mean?

GSM is an acronym for grams per square metre. It measures the weight, and therefore the density and thickness, of paper and fabric-like materials, including kraft paper, tissue paper and non-woven polypropylene (NWPP).

Put simply, it tells you how much one square metre of the material weighs. The higher the GSM, the heavier, thicker and sturdier the material feels.

Why GSM matters when choosing packaging

GSM is the quickest way to judge quality and strength before you buy:

Lower GSM (for example tissue paper around 17 to 22gsm) is light and delicate, ideal for wrapping and cushioning.
Medium GSM paper suits everyday carry bags and gift wrapping.
Higher GSM (for example 80gsm and above kraft) gives you strong, premium bags that carry more weight and feel high quality.

Matching GSM to the job means your packaging is strong enough to protect the product without paying for more material than you need.
