Choosing the Right Thickness (µm)

Micron (µm) is the thickness of the film — the single most important spec to match to the job. Heavier gauges resist tears under wet or heavy loads; lighter gauges keep cost down for high-volume light-duty jobs. Buying a heavier gauge than the job needs adds cost with no benefit; going too light means split bags and double-bagging.

35µm — Standard (37 products)

Everyday, high-volume, light-duty. Perfect for fresh produce, bakery use, small retail items, dry ingredients, and general food packing. The most popular thickness across QIS's poly bag range. Use for: fruit shops packing individual produce, bakeries bagging bread rolls or biscuits, small retail packaging, cafés portioning dry ingredients, high-volume operations where cost per bag matters most.

50µm — Medium (multiple products)

General-purpose food packing, retail, light storage. A step up from 35µm when you need better puncture resistance for irregular or slightly heavier contents. Use for: butcher counter portioning, larger bakery items, retail packaging of moderate-weight goods, garment retail, spare parts packaging.

75µm — Heavy (multiple products)

100µm — Heavy Duty (15 products)

LDPE vs HDPE vs Polypropylene — Which Do You Need?

Clear plastic bags can be manufactured from several different materials, each with distinct properties:

LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) — what QIS poly bags are made from. Soft, slightly stretchy, semi-translucent to clear. Ideal for food-service, produce, freezer storage, and general packaging. Freezer-safe and puncture-resistant. This is the workhorse plastic bag material.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) — stiffer and more "crinkly" than LDPE. Better tear strength per micron. Common in supermarket singlet checkout bags. Not typically used for flat poly bags.

Polypropylene (PP) and BOPP — much clearer than LDPE, but stiffer. Not as good for freezer use (can turn brittle). Used for retail display and gift packaging where crystal clarity is important.
