7 Warehouse Packing Shortcuts to Cut Shipping Costs

admin |

QIS Packaging has shipped tens of thousands of parcels over 30+ years, and we've picked up plenty of efficiency tricks along the way. Here are seven shortcuts to speed up your warehouse packing and cut freight costs.

1. Cut down boxes that aren't full

Freight is usually charged by cubic (volumetric) weight, so a half-empty box costs you more than it should. Cut the corners and fold the sides down to shrink the box to its contents. A small saving per parcel — a big saving over thousands.

2. Print your logo on packing tape

Branded printed tape adds a brand touchpoint at the doorstep — and makes a lost parcel far easier for couriers to identify and recover.

3. Compress the air out of satchels

Sealing air into a courier bag adds volume — and cost. Press the air out before sealing to keep parcels compact.

4. Use flexible packaging for odd shapes

For irregular items, layflat plastic tubing on a roll lets you cut the exact length you need and seal both ends — no need to stock dozens of box sizes.

5. Step back and review your process

When you've packed the same way for years, it's easy to stop questioning it. Periodically review for better methods — we switched from double-bagging large items to tubing and saved both time and money.

6. Reuse incoming packaging

Bubble wrap and void fill that arrives from your suppliers (if undamaged) can be reused to protect your own outgoing orders — a free shortcut.

7. Add a dispenser to your paper roll

If you wrap with a kraft paper roll, a bench or wall-mounted dispenser makes tearing to size far faster.
