How to Use Plastic Strapping (Easy 5-Step Guide)

admin |

Strapping a few cartons together looks simple — until it's your first time and the buckle won't grip. This quick guide (with a 60-second video) walks you through how to use plastic strapping the easy way, plus the specs and tools you'll need to get a tight, secure strap every time.

What you'll need

How to use plastic strapping in 5 steps

  1. Wrap the strapping around your items and make a loop at each end.
  2. Thread both loops into the bracing buckle and fold the locking arms over.
  3. Pull the loose ends to draw the strap tight and lock the arms in.
  4. Cut off the excess strapping.
  5. Repeat for a second strap (run it at 90° to the first for heavier loads).

Choosing the right strapping: breaking strain

Plastic strapping breaking strain ranges from about 95 kg up to 1,100 kg depending on the grade and width you choose. As a rough guide:

Use case Typical choice
Light bundling (cartons, print, light parcels) Lighter-gauge poly strapping + plastic buckles
General warehouse & pallet loads Heavier poly strapping + metal seals (crimped)
Very heavy / sharp-edged loads Steel strapping (special order — ask us)

Plastic vs metal buckles

Plastic buckles (shown in the video) are quick and tool-free — ideal for lighter bundling. For heavier loads, metal seals hold more tension but need a crimping tool to lock them. If you're strapping a pallet of stock, pair strapping with our stretch wrap for a fully secured load.

FAQ

What is plastic strapping used for?
Bundling cartons, securing goods to pallets, and closing boxes for transport — anywhere you need a strong, tamper-evident strap.

Do I need a tensioner?
For occasional light bundling you can hand-tension and use plastic buckles. For consistent, tight straps on heavier loads, a tensioner and cutter make the job faster and safer.

What's the difference between poly and steel strapping?
Poly (plastic) strapping suits most everyday loads up to ~1,100 kg breaking strain. Steel is for extreme loads or sharp edges — talk to us if you think you need it.
