Queensland Plastic Bag Ban Explained (2026 Guide)

admin |

Queensland banned lightweight single-use plastic shopping bags back in July 2018, and the state's single-use plastics rules have only tightened since. If you're a retailer, here's a plain-English refresher on what's banned, what's exempt, and the compliant bag alternatives that work best for your store.

This article is a general guide, not legal advice — always check the latest Queensland Government single-use plastics rules for current specifics and penalties.

Which bags are banned?

The ban applies to lightweight single-use plastic shopping bags under 35 microns (µm), including:

  • Standard single-use plastic checkout (singlet) bags
  • "Degradable" plastic bags
  • "Biodegradable" plastic bags

Retailers can't hand these out at the checkout. Penalties apply for supplying banned bags, so it's worth getting your alternatives sorted.

Which bags are exempt?

  • Barrier bags (deli-style bags for unpackaged meat, fruit and veg)
  • Genuinely reusable heavier-duty bags (35 µm and over)
  • Bread bags and other integral product packaging
  • Bin liners used for their intended purpose

Compliant alternatives (and what they cost)

The cheap 1–2c singlet bag is gone, but there are budget-friendly compliant options. Match the bag to your average sale value:

Why are "degradable" and "biodegradable" bags banned too?

Degradable bags break into micro-plastics that still harm marine life, and there's little evidence biodegradable bags break down meaningfully faster in the ocean. To protect the Great Barrier Reef, both are caught by the ban unless they're 35 µm+ and genuinely reusable.

FAQ

Can I still give out plastic bags in Queensland?
Only genuinely reusable bags 35 µm and over, plus the exempt categories above. Lightweight single-use bags under 35 µm are banned.

What's the best cheap alternative?
Flat paper bags for small/low-value sales; die-cut-handle bags or NWPP for a reusable checkout bag.
