What Is Builders Film?

Builders film is heavy-duty black polyethylene plastic sheeting used predominantly on construction sites as a moisture barrier under concrete slabs, drop sheet for paint and renovation work, and general-purpose plastic tarpaulin. It's also widely used in landscaping and home gardens as a weed control underlay — block out sunlight, kill weeds, prevent regrowth. The thick black polyethylene is durable enough for trade use yet flexible enough to lay across uneven ground, awkward shapes, and large slab footprints.

QIS stocks builders film as centrefold rolls — the roll is folded down the centre so it travels and stores at half-width (1m folded), then opens out to the full 2m wide on site. That makes it much easier to carry, lift onto trucks, and feed off the roll than a single-fold 2m roll would be. Available in two thicknesses: 100µm for lighter-duty general work, and 200µm for heavy-duty under-slab and long-term applications. Stock items, same-day dispatch on orders before 12pm.

Why Choose QIS Builders Film?

QIS supplies builders film in the two thicknesses Australian builders and tradies actually use day-to-day — 100µm for lighter applications and 200µm for heavy-duty under-slab work and long-term ground cover. Both are black (the industry standard for under-slab and weed-mat use) and both come on wide 2m centrefold rolls for easy on-site handling.

The centrefold format is the genuine convenience win — a flat 2m roll is awkward to manoeuvre through doorways, up scaffolding, or into the back of a ute, while a 1m folded roll travels easily and still rolls out to a full 2m wide once positioned. Lengths are sized so each roll covers a substantial area in a single piece — 100m of the 100µm covers 200m² of ground, and 50m of the 200µm covers 100m². Backed by QIS's 5% price-beat guarantee.

How to order: Choose your thickness from the table below and order online by the roll, or fill out our enquiry form for bulk orders or site-pack pricing. Alternatively call us on 1800 555 343.

Available Sizes

Both rolls are 2m wide unfolded (centrefolded to 1m for transport), black polyethylene. Click any size for full details:

Thickness Width Length SKU
100µm (lighter duty) 2m (centrefold to 1m) 100m CFBLK100UM
200µm (heavy duty) 2m (centrefold to 1m) 50m CFBLK200UM

100µm vs 200µm — Which Thickness Should You Choose?

The two thicknesses suit different applications:

  • 100µm — lighter-duty option for short-term and general-purpose use. Suitable as: drop sheets, dust barriers, painters' cover, temporary weather cover, weed mat in garden beds, basic ground cover. More economical per square metre and the 100m length covers a large area in a single roll.
  • 200µm — twice the thickness for heavy-duty and long-term applications. Suitable as: vapour barrier under residential and commercial concrete slabs, long-term ground cover, sub-floor moisture barrier, heavy site protection, areas with foot or wheelbarrow traffic. The thicker film resists puncture from gravel, screws, and tools.

For under-slab vapour barrier use in residential construction, always confirm the compliance requirement with your builder, engineer, or building surveyor — Australian Standard AS 2870 (Residential slabs and footings) specifies minimum thickness and certification requirements for damp-proof membranes, and the 200µm builders film is the heavier-grade choice typically specified for this application.

If you're unsure which thickness suits your project, fill out our enquiry form and we'll help you choose based on the job.

What Is a Centrefold Roll?

A centrefold roll is a wide plastic sheet that's folded in half down the centre before being rolled up. The roll itself is half the width of the unfolded sheet — easier to transport, easier to lift, easier to fit through standard doorways and scaffold gaps. When you need the sheet on site, you simply unfold it after positioning to get the full 2m width.

QIS builders film centrefold rolls travel at 1m wide folded and open out to 2m wide on site — a meaningful handling improvement over flat 2m rolls, especially for solo tradies and confined-space jobs.
