What Are Strapping Tools?

Strapping tools are the manual hand tools used to apply heavy-duty poly strapping when hand-strapping isn't strong enough. The heavy-duty 19mm black strapping is too thick and rigid to be pulled tight by hand — instead, you need a tensioner to pull the strap tight around the load, and a crimper to crush a metal seal flat, locking the strap in place permanently.

These two tools work as a matched pair — you need both to complete the workflow. A tensioner without a crimper leaves the strapping pulled tight but unsecured; a crimper without a tensioner means you can't get the strap tight enough in the first place.

QIS stocks 2 manual strapping tools — a tensioner and a crimper, both for 19mm heavy-duty strapping. Stock items, same-day dispatch on orders before 12pm.

Why Choose QIS Strapping Tools?

Manual strapping tools are a one-time investment that lasts years of high-volume use. Once you've bought the tensioner and crimper, every subsequent strapping operation costs only the strapping itself plus a metal seal (under 10 cents per bundle for the seal). Compared to ongoing buckle costs on hand-applied strapping, the tools pay for themselves quickly in any operation strapping more than a few cartons per day.

The genuine performance advantage: heavy-duty strapping + tools holds tighter loads more securely than any hand-applied strapping. For pallets, heavy freight, large bundles, and high-value loads where the strap absolutely cannot loosen in transit, this is the only workflow that delivers true commercial-grade load security. Backed by QIS's 5% price-beat guarantee.

Both tools sold individually. You need both to use heavy-duty strapping. Click any tool for full details:

Tool Unit SKU Use For
Tensioner Tool Each TENSIONER Pulling 19mm heavy duty strapping tight around the load
Crimping Tool Each CRIMP19MM Crushing metal seals flat to lock the strapping in place

How the Tools Work — The 4-Step Workflow

For 19mm heavy-duty black strapping with seals:

  1. Run the strapping under the load and back up the other side, overlapping the two ends at the top
  2. Position a 19mm metal seal over the strapping overlap
  3. Tension with the tensioner tool — clamp the strapping into the tool and ratchet the handle to pull the strap tight against the load
  4. Crimp with the crimping tool — close it over the metal seal and squeeze hard. The crushed seal grips both layers of strapping and locks them together permanently

The whole process takes about 30-45 seconds per bundle once you've got the workflow down. Cut the strapping above the seal with scissors or a utility knife and you're done.

Strapping, Buckles & Tools Compatibility

Read before ordering. These tools only work with 19mm heavy-duty (black) strapping. The 12mm, 15mm, and 19mm blue poly strapping options are too thin to thread through the tool — they're designed for hand-application with buckles, not tools.

Strapping Plastic Buckles Metal Buckles Metal Seals Crimper Tool Tensioner Tool
12mm Poly (Blue) ✅ — — — —
15mm Poly (Blue) ✅ — — — —
19mm Poly (Blue) — ✅ — — —
19mm Heavy Duty (Black) — — ✅ ✅ ✅

Two key rules from the QIS team:

  • Heavy-duty strapping is thicker and cannot be hand-strapped — it needs the tensioner and crimper.
  • Blue (regular) strapping is too thin to thread through these tools — so use buckles for blue strapping, not these tools.

What's the Full Heavy-Duty Strapping Kit?

To set up heavy-duty strapping from scratch, you need 4 components:

  1. 19mm Heavy Duty Strapping — 1000m roll in dispenser box
  2. 19mm Metal Seals — carton of 1,000
  3. Tensioner Tool — this collection
  4. Crimping Tool — this collection

The upfront kit investment is in the low-mid hundreds, but the per-bundle cost after that is just strapping (cents per metre) plus one metal seal (under 10 cents). For high-volume warehouses, manufacturers, and dispatch teams, this is the most cost-effective long-term strapping setup.

Who Uses QIS Strapping Tools?

Strapping tools are essential for any operation using heavy-duty strapping at scale:

  • Manufacturers and wholesalers — high-volume palletised dispatch, finished goods bundling
  • Distribution centres and warehouses — bulk pallet securing, inter-warehouse transfers, large freight loads
  • Freight forwarders and logistics teams — heavy or high-value consignments where load security is critical
  • Removalists — heavy-load consolidations, awkward bundle securing for long-distance moves
  • Recyclers — cardboard bale strapping, scrap bundle securing
  • Print and publishing — heavy book and magazine bundle dispatch
  • Hardware and trade suppliers — heavy product bundles, long-product strapping
  • Industrial manufacturers — finished goods, heavy equipment protection, palletised assembly

For lighter-duty hand-strapping operations using blue poly strapping, you don't need these tools — see Buckles and Seals for the hand-application fasteners instead.
