Please note: singlet bag measurements include the handle and are the total bag size, not the usable space inside.

Paper or Plastic: Which Takeaway Bag Should You Use?

Paper takeaway bags are the standard customer-facing choice for most Australian cafés, bakeries and restaurants. They are 100% recyclable through kerbside paper recycling, plastic-free, and the natural brown kraft look tells customers your food is fresh and your business cares about packaging waste. Handled carry bags are the go-to for delivery drivers, while SOS bags stand upright on the counter so staff can load orders with one hand during peak service.

Plastic and film bags have their place too. Singlet bags are a low-cost option for busy counters and are not affected by moisture from wet or saucy orders. Cellophane bags show off baked goods and sweets, and resealable pouches keep snacks fresh after the customer gets home.

Rules on plastic carry bags differ between Australian states and territories, so check what applies in your area. Many venues use paper as the main customer bag and keep plastic for wet orders or products that need to be seen.

Choosing the Right Takeaway Bag Size

• Coffee and pastry pickup: flat paper bag 165x185mm or SOS Size 1 to 2
• Sandwiches, wraps and rolls: flat paper bags 200x235mm, or gusseted flat bags for thicker fillings
• Single meal with one or two containers: small paper carry bag 280x280mm
• Two-person meals and standard delivery orders: medium paper carry bag 320x330mm, the all-rounder for most takeaway shops
• Family meals, group orders and catering: large paper carry bag 350x320mm in heavier 150gsm paper, or SOS Size 25
• Biscuits, fudge and sweets: cellophane bags, flat or gusseted depending on the product
• Snacks customers will reseal: clear stand-up pouch bags
• Fast counter service at the lowest cost per bag: medium or large plastic singlet bags

Most takeaway businesses keep one main carry bag size in stock, plus a smaller bag for single items and a larger bag for group orders.
