What Is Voidfill?

Voidfill is the loose-fill packing material used to fill empty space inside cartons so products can't shift, slide, or collide during transit. Without voidfill, products bounce around inside oversized cartons — leading to damage, cracked packaging, and disappointed customers. The right voidfill cushions the contents from every angle and immobilises them inside the carton.

QIS stocks Green-PAK biodegradable packing peanuts — a plant-based, cornstarch-derived voidfill that delivers the same shock absorption and immobilisation as traditional polystyrene packing peanuts, without the environmental harm. Green-PAK peanuts are:

  • Fully biodegradable and compostable — break down naturally when disposed of in soil or organic waste streams
  • Dissolve in water — for easy small-volume disposal, just rinse them away (one of the easiest disposal methods in the industry)
  • Anti-static — safe for electronics, computer parts, sensitive components
  • Shock-absorbent — fill irregular gaps around contents with cushioning that protects fragile items
  • Reusable — collect them at the end of one shipment, use them in the next

Supplied in a bag of 0.4 cubic metres (400 litres) — enough voidfill to fill approximately 80 small e-commerce cartons. Stock items, same-day dispatch on orders before 12pm.

Why Choose QIS Green-PAK Voidfill?

The biodegradable angle isn't just marketing — it solves a real problem for Australian e-commerce sellers. Traditional polystyrene packing peanuts are not accepted in most kerbside recycling and end up in landfill for centuries. Customers increasingly judge brands on their packaging waste, and one carton of polystyrene peanuts can be the most-complained-about element of an otherwise great unboxing experience.

Green-PAK peanuts disappear in seconds when rinsed under a tap, or break down in any compost setup. Your customers can dispose of them guilt-free, which protects your brand's sustainability reputation without compromising on shipping protection. Backed by QIS's 5% price-beat guarantee.

How to Use Voidfill

The process is simple and adds about 30 seconds to each pack-out:

  1. Place the product in the centre of the carton, leaving roughly even space on all sides
  2. Pour voidfill peanuts into the carton until the product is surrounded on all sides, filling every gap
  3. Shake the carton gently to settle the peanuts and identify any remaining voids
  4. Top up with more peanuts until the carton is completely full — no shifting space
  5. Close and seal the carton with packing tape

The key principle: the carton should be completely full. Empty space is what allows contents to move and damage to occur. Slightly overfilling is better than slightly underfilling — the extra peanuts compress harmlessly during sealing.

When to Use Packing Peanuts vs Other Voidfill

Different voidfill materials suit different products:

  • Packing peanuts (this Green-PAK) — best for irregular-shaped items where the peanuts flow around shapes and fill every gap. Most common use case for general e-commerce.
  • Bubblewrap — best for directly wrapping individual fragile items before they go in the carton. Use bubblewrap to wrap the item, then peanuts to fill remaining gaps.
  • Kraft paper crumple — best when you want a fully paper-based shipping experience for eco-conscious branding. Slightly less protection than peanuts but fully recyclable through standard paper streams.
  • Corrugated cardboard rolls — best for protecting flat surfaces and edges where peanuts wouldn't add much value.

Most operations use a combination — bubblewrap around the product, peanuts to fill the carton, and corrugated cardboard for any flat surfaces that need edge protection.

How Far Does 0.4m³ Go?

The 0.4 cubic metre (400 litres) bag size translates to roughly:

  • 80 small e-commerce cartons (around 5L of voidfill per carton — typical for small jewellery, accessories, electronics, candles)
  • 40 medium cartons (around 10L per carton — typical for homewares, mid-size electronics, multi-item orders)
  • 20 large cartons (around 20L per carton — typical for fragile artwork, large items, mixed orders)

Actual usage depends on product size and carton fill ratio — order extra bags if you're running high-volume dispatch.
