Not all packaging tape is the same — the adhesive makes a big difference. Here is a quick guide to choosing the right one.
How packaging tape works
Packaging tape combines a plastic backing film with an adhesive that bonds two surfaces together and resists them separating. The type of adhesive determines how well it sticks, and in what conditions.
The three main adhesive types
- Acrylic — sticks well to plastic and cardboard and is the most economical option. A great all-rounder for general use.
- Hot-melt — offers superior adhesion to acrylic and performs best in neutral (not too hot, not too cold) environments.
- Natural rubber — very effective on cardboard, but not recommended for hot applications.
