Teflon tape, also called PTFE tape, is the non-stick strip that sits over the heating element and base of an impulse heat sealer. It stops the bag from melting onto the element, protects the machine body from the heat, and gives you a clean, even seal every time you press down.
Over time the tape wears where it meets the hot element. You will see it discolour, then seals start to stick, wrinkle or come out weak. That is the time to replace the tape, and usually the element too, which is why we pack them together in heat sealer repair kits.
How long tape lasts depends on how hard the sealer works. A sealer can make roughly 1,000 to 5,000 seals before the element and teflon tape wear out, and higher timer settings wear them faster. Keep a spare kit on hand so a worn strip never stops your packing line.

When to change your teflon tape
- Look for discolouration
- Replace the non-adhesive cover before it burns through. Brown marks along the element line are the first sign of wear.
- Move the cover along
- You can shift a non-adhesive cover back and forth so the element meets an unused section, which gets more life from each strip.
- Change the base strip with the element
- The adhesive strip under the element is a heat barrier. Replace it every time you fit a new element.
- Leave some overhang
- Fit the adhesive strip about 6mm to 13mm past the element on both ends so the element never touches the sealer body.

How many seals can my sealer make before I need to change the element and teflon tape?

A sealer can make between 1,000 and 5,000 seals before the element and teflon tape become worn and break. This number varies a lot with the timer setting: the higher the setting, the faster they wear.
When do I change the teflon tape on a heat sealer?

Change the non-adhesive cover before it burns through. As it wears you will notice discolouration where it touches the element, and you can move the cover back and forth so the element meets unused sections.
The adhesive teflon strip under the element should be replaced whenever you change the element. It is the barrier between the element and the sealer body, so fit it about 6mm to 13mm (1/4 to 1/2 inch) past the machine on both ends.
Can I buy the element and teflon tape together?

Yes. Our heat sealer repair kits include replacement teflon tape with new heating elements, as the two are designed to be changed together. Kits for sealers with a cutter also include replacement cutting tools. Check each kit for its exact contents.

Match the kit to the width of your sealer jaw (200mm to 1000mm), then check whether your sealer has a built-in cutter. Sealers with a cutter need the "with cutter" kit. Use the kit finder table above, or ask our team.
Is heat sealer teflon tape the same as plumbing thread tape?

No. Heat sealer tape is made to sit against a hot sealing element. The thin white thread seal tape used on plumbing fittings is a different product and is not suitable for protecting a heat sealer.
