BOPP turns up on packaging spec sheets all the time, but what does it actually mean, and why is it used for so many clear bags and wraps? Here is a quick, practical explainer.

What does BOPP stand for?

BOPP is an acronym for Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene. It is a polypropylene film that is stretched in both directions during manufacturing. That biaxial stretching is the secret to its performance: it dramatically increases stiffness, tensile strength and clarity, while giving the film a good moisture-vapour barrier.

Why BOPP is so popular for packaging

BOPP is prized for one standout quality: it is exceptionally clear. That glass-like transparency makes it ideal for any product that needs to be seen, such as food, confectionery and retail goods. Add its strength and moisture resistance, and you have a film that both protects and helps sell the product inside.

  • Crystal-clear display for maximum shelf appeal
  • Strong and stiff, so bags hold their shape
  • Good barrier against moisture and dust
  • Recyclable

BOPP vs cellophane

BOPP is often sold as cellophane because it looks and behaves so similarly. The main difference is that natural cellophane is biodegradable, while BOPP is recyclable and generally more cost-effective. Read more in What is Cellophane?
