Newsprint paper is one of the most versatile and economical packing materials around — but there is a bit more to it than old newspapers. Here is what newsprint actually is, what it is used for, and how to choose the right format.

What is newsprint paper?

Newsprint is a thin, lightweight, uncoated paper made mostly from wood pulp. It is clean, unprinted and very affordable, which is exactly why it has so many uses well beyond the printing press. In the packaging world its white form is often called butchers paper, and it is sold in both rolls and sheets.

What is newsprint paper used for?

  • Wrapping and packing — protecting glassware, crockery and fragile items during moving and shipping.
  • Void fill — scrunched into boxes to cushion contents and fill empty space.
  • Food service — butchers have wrapped meat in it for decades, and the white version is popular for deli counters, table coverings and menu boards.
  • Arts, crafts and education — a cheap, clean surface for painting, drawing and kids activities.

Because it is unprinted and ink-free, clean newsprint is a tidy, hygienic choice for wrapping and a much better option than reusing old newspaper.

Newsprint rolls vs sheets

Rolls are ideal for a packing bench or wrapping station where you dispense as much as you need, while pre-cut sheets are handy for grab-and-go wrapping and lining. The right GSM (paper weight) depends on how much protection you need.
