What Are Strapping Buckles and Seals?

Buckles and seals are the fasteners that lock poly strapping in place after it's been pulled tight around a carton, bundle, or pallet. Without a buckle or seal, even the strongest strapping is useless — the strap would slip and the bundle would fall apart. The buckle/seal is what turns a length of plastic strapping into a permanent secure fastening.

Buckles vs Seals — What's the Difference?

Two different mechanical methods for the same job:

• Buckles — work by threading the strap through teeth or a slot that grip the plastic as you pull tight. Used with hand-applied strapping. Reusable-style design — the buckle holds the strap through friction and the angle of the threading. Suitable for plastic strapping (12mm, 15mm, and 19mm blue).
• Seals — single-use metal sleeves that fit over a strap-overlap join and are then crushed flat with a crimper tool. The crushed metal grips both layers of the strap and locks them together. Stronger than buckles for heavy loads — used with the heaviest strapping (19mm heavy-duty black).

If you're hand-strapping (no tools), you need buckles. If you're using a tensioner and crimper, you need seals.

Strapping, Buckles & Tools Compatibility

Read before ordering. The wrong combination won't work mechanically — buckles must match the strapping width, and the heavy-duty seal/tensioner/crimper system only works with the heavy-duty (thick) strapping.

Two key rules from the QIS team:

• Heavy-duty strapping is thicker and cannot be hand-strapped — it needs a tensioner and crimper, and uses metal seals (not buckles).
• Blue strapping is too thin to thread through the heavy-duty tools — so blue strapping must be fastened by hand with buckles (plastic for 12/15mm, metal for 19mm blue).

If you're new to strapping, start with 15mm Blue Poly Strapping + 15mm Plastic Buckles — the easiest beginner combo, no tools required.

How Many Buckles or Seals Per Roll of Strapping?

A rough planning guide assuming each bundle uses about 2 metres of strapping (one strap wrapped around two stacked cartons):

• 1,000m roll of strapping = approximately 500 bundles = 500 buckles or seals needed
• For most operations, one 1,000-pack of buckles/seals matches roughly two 1,000m rolls of strapping (since most bundles only use 1-1.5m of strapping each, not 2m)

This means a 1,000-piece bag/carton of buckles should outlast 1-2 rolls of strapping. Order buckles when you order your second roll of strapping to keep restock cycles aligned.
